The University of California, Berkeley welcomes you to join Bay Area schools in the 3rd Bay Area Decision Sciences Summit hosted by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) at UC Berkeley and the Decision Sciences Student Association (DSSA) at SFSU. Teams of interdisciplinary students will derive insights from a real-world data set and present findings to IEOR professors. There will also be workshops introducing several common data science tools.
Food will be provided.

NOTE: Space is limited to 40 students so you must register for the event in advance. Register on our website by 11:59 PM Monday, April 3rd to reserve your spot. We will email all registered students to confirm attendance. Teams will be formed on the day of the event.

FAQ

Who can participate?

We hope you’ll walk away with tools to approach a data science problem, and an understanding of Python, Pandas, or Juypter. It is also a fantastic opportunity to work with others who are interested in the same subject! We will invite industry speakers and have judges who are either working with data science or are currently professors at Berkeley or SFSU, so it’ll be a great way to learn more from those who are deep in the field. Come out for a day of food, fun, and learning. There will also be prizes

What if I don’t know anything, can I still participate? Will I benefit from this experience?

You don’t need any experience to participate! We welcome all levels as we will have workshops throughout the day to introduce you to tools and methods in order to break down the data set. Additionally, some people will have more experience than others, and the focus of this summit is collaboration. You will learn from workshops, but also others. This is an opportunity to learn more about data science, the tools used to break it down and organize it, and meet others who are also interested in this field

2017 - BADSS Summit Helps Grow Bay Area Decision Sciences Community

Sometimes you can learn more by collaborating with others outside the classroom than you can learn inside of it.

That was what San Francisco State University (SFSU) College of Business dean, Linda Oubre, told students to kick off the first ever Bay Area Decision Sciences Summit (BADSS), an event organized by undergraduate students and faculty from the University of California at Berkeley, San Jose State University (SJSU), Santa Clara University (SCU), and SFSU.

2019 - BADSS - IISE’s Data Science Summit

Often regarded as the ‘combustion engine-like revolution’ of the 21st century, data analytics is on a rapid rise in today’s world. Realizing this, members of UC Berkeley’s Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) took the onus on themselves to host the second Bay Area Decision Sciences Summit (BADSS) on March 16th, 2019.

Much like the summit last year, the objective was to assemble a large community of aspiring students and established faculty passionate about the field of decision sciences.
