Data Science. Optimization. Collaboration.

The University of California, Berkeley welcomes you to join Bay Area schools in the 2nd Annual Bay Area Decision Sciences Summit hosted by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). Teams of interdisciplinary students will derive insights from a real-word data set and present findings to IEOR professors. There will be beginner workshops hosted by UC Berkeley's Data Science Society (DSS) introducing a popular data analytics tool called Jupyter Notebook. Food will be provided.

NOTE: Space is limited to 40 students so you must register for the event in advance. Register on our website by 11:59 PM Wednesday, March 13th to reserve your spot. We will email all registered students to confirm attendance. Teams will be formed on the day of the event.

Workshops

Data Science Society @ Berkeley is hosting a 3-part workshop series for the Data Science Summit! In each hour, the workshop will be a mix of some lecture and some hands-on exercises.
Note: We will be working with the Anaconda platform, the Jupyter notebook environment, and the Python programming language.
In order to attend this workshop, please follow the linked tutorial to download Anaconda, if you don’t have it already.
Workshop 1 - Python and Pandas: In this hour, our teachers will be doing an introduction to Python and the Pandas library. You do not need any programming experience to attend
Workshop 2 - First half of the data science life cycle: In this hour, you will focus on attaining data, cleaning data, and starting basic analysis. This workshop assumes you have a knowledge of Python and some knowledge of libraries like Pandas, matplotlib, etc. For a challenge, beginners are still encouraged to attend.
Workshop 3 - Second half of the data science life cycle: In this hour, you will focus on more visualization, advanced analysis, and drawing conclusions. This workshop assumes you have a knowledge of Python, some knowledge of statistics, and some knowledge of libraries like Pandas, matplotlib, etc. For a challenge, beginners are still encouraged to attend.
